Twelve iwi-based response staff are now skilled in quad bike driving after receiving training to assist them in safely monitoring oil clean ups on beaches.
The quad bike training sessions were funded by Maritime New Zealand and under taken by DriveZone in Tauranga to support clean up crews on remote islands and beaches in the Bay of Plenty, using quad bikes donated by Landcorp.
People from Motiti Island, Maketu and the ICC took part in the training session today.
DriveZone owner John James says the quad bike training course encompasses theoretical and practical components focusing on the safety and awareness of the rider, vehicle and environment.
'It also covers safe riding techniques for a variety of terrains.”
He says practical evaluation took place at DriveZone's purpose built riding track in Ohauiti.

So Maritime NZ paid for the course which I bet cost plenty probably teaching people who knew plenty about Quad bikes already. I see Landcorp donated the Quad bikes I hope they mean loaned the bikes for the tuition only. The public will be gutted if it turns out people have scored Quad bikes out of the RENA disaster.
