Hearts, war and the weather

In today's forecast we are expecting showers, some heavy with hail and a chance of it being thundery, but clearing in the late evening and the northwesterly dying out.

It's a three-clothing layer day today with a high of 14 and an overnight low of 5 degrees. Humidity is 79 per cent.

High tide is at 12.20pm and low tide is at 6.30 pm (Tay Street times). There's a sea swell of .9m with a sea temperature of 15 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.51pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 5 and 7pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1939 New Zealand declared war on Germany. Alongside Britain and Australia, New Zealand was one of the first countries to become involved in the global conflict precipitated by Germany's invasion of Poland on September 1 1939.

Sixty years ago in 1958 the first open-heart surgery was performed in New Zealand. Pioneering heart surgeon Brian Barratt-Boyes performed the surgery using a heart-lung bypass machine. The procedure, at Green Lane Hospital in Auckland, was carried out on an 11-year-old girl with a hole in her heart

In world history on this day in 1189 Richard the Lionheart was crowned King of England. In 1777 the American stars and stripes flag was carried into battle for the first time.

In 1783 the Treaty of Paris was signed by Great Britain and the new United States, formally bringing the American Revolution to an end.

In 1939 after Germany ignored Great Britain's ultimatum to stop the invasion of Poland, Great Britain declared war on Germany, marking the beginning of World War II in Europe.

In 1944 Anne Frank and her family were placed on the last transport train from the Westerbork transit camp to the Auschwitz concentration camp, arriving three days later.

In 1976 the unmanned US spacecraft Viking 2 landed on Mars, taking the first close-up, colour photos of the planet's surface. In 2016 the U.S. and China, together responsible for 40 per cent of the world's carbon emissions, both formally joined the Paris global climate agreement. In 2017 North Korea conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test.

Today is the birthday of American author and poet Sarah Orne Jewett. Born in 1849 she once said "What has made this nation great? Not its heroes but its households."
