UPDATED 10.38AM: Police remain at a property in Otewa Road, Otorohanga following the fatal shooting of a 50-year-old woman yesterday evening.

ESR and other experts are assisting Police in a scene examination.

The 57-year-old man taken to hospital in a critical condition is now stable, says a police spokesperson.

"Police inquiries are continuing, however we are not seeking anyone else in relation to the shooting."

EARLIER:

A woman is dead and another person has been critically injured following a shooting in the Waikato.

Police were called to the Otewa Road address in Otorohanga at 7.38pm.

A 50-year-old woman died at the scene and a 57-year-old man has been taken to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition, says Inspector John Kelly.

"Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.

"A firearm has been recovered and a scene guard is in place."
