In today's forecast we are expecting rain, with possible downpours and thunderstorms until evening. Also brisk northeasterlies.

High tide is at 8.30am and low tide is at 2.40pm. There's a sea swell of 1.0m with a sea temperature of 14 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.47pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 4.30 and 7.30pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1914 a New Zealand force captured German Samoa. Colonel Robert Logan led a 1400-strong expeditionary force to capture German Samoa in New Zealand's first action of the First World War. This was the second German territory, after Togoland in East Africa, to fall to the Allies in the war.

In world history on this day in 1831 Michael Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction. In 1885 Gottlieb Daimler patented the world's first internal combustion motorcycle, the Reitwagen. In 1898 the Goodyear tyre company was founded. In 1949 the USSR exploded its first atomic bomb, 'First Lightning.” In 1965 astronauts L. Gordon Cooper Jr. and Charles 'Pete” Conrad Jr completed 120 Earth orbits in Gemini 5, marking the first time the US set an international duration record for a manned space mission.

Today is the birthday of John Locke, philosopher of liberalism whose ideas influenced the American founding fathers, and famous for his treatise An Essay Concerning Human Understanding. Born in 1632, he once said "What worries you, masters you" and "A sound mind in a sound body, is a short but full description of a happy state in this world."

Today is also the birthday of Academy Award–winning director and producer Richard Attenborough. Born in 1923 he once said "The question is, are we happy to suppose that our grandchildren may never be able to see an elephant except in a picture book?”
