Madonna, gold rush and the weather

In today's forecast we are expecting a fine day, then a few showers at night. Also westerlies.

It's a two-clothing layer day today with a high of 17 and an overnight low of 11 degrees. Humidity is 78 per cent.

High tide is at 10.20am and low tide is at 4.30pm. There's a sea swell of .2m with a sea temperature of 15 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.36pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 3.30 and 5.30pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1944 CORSO was formed. CORSO was set up to support aid efforts in war-torn nations. It became increasingly involved in the developing world and also spoke out about poverty in New Zealand.

In 2008 the Evers-Swindell twins defended their Olympic rowing title at Beijing. While Kiwis had high expectations of their rowing squad at the Beijing Olympics, few expected identical twins Caroline and Georgina Evers-Swindell to successfully defend the double sculls title they had won in Athens in 2004

In world history on this day in 1858 U.S. President James Buchanan and Britain's Queen Victoria exchanged messages inaugurating the first transatlantic telegraph line. In 1896 gold was discovered in the Klondike of Canada's Yukon Territory, setting off the Klondike Gold Rush.

In 1930 the first colour sound cartoon, called Fiddlesticks, was made by Ub Iwerks. In 1960 Joseph Kittinger parachuted from a balloon over New Mexico at 102,800 feet (31,300 m), setting three records that held until 2012: High-altitude jump, free fall, and highest speed by a human without an aircraft.

Today is the birthday of Louise Veronica Ciccone, entertainer and singer. Born in 1958, and known as Madonna, she once said "We all bleed the same colour. We all want to love and be loved".
