Fine start in Tauranga, but rain on the way

In today's forecast we are expecting cloud increasing. A few showers developing in the afternoon, turning to rain in the late evening. Also northeasterlies developing in the morning.

It's a three-clothing layer day today with a high of 15 and an overnight low of 10 degrees. Humidity is 99 per cent.

Low tide is at 2pm and high tide is at 8.20pm. There's a sea swell of .5m with a sea temperature of 15 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.34pm.

If you're going fishing today the next best fish bite time is between 4.30 and 7.30pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1914 was the first fatal NZ casualty of the Great War. Sapper Robert Arthur Hislop was guarding Parnell railway bridge in Auckland when he accidentally fell, dying from his injuries six days later.

It would take a century for Hislop to be officially recognised as the first New Zealand casualty of the Great War.

In 2005 was the death of David Lange. David was New Zealand's youngest prime minister of the 20th century. Renowned for his sharp wit and oratory, he led the fourth Labour government from 1984 to 1989.

In world history on this day in 1889 the first coin-operated telephone was patented by William Gray. In 1910 British nurse Florence Nightingale, famous for her care of British soldiers during the Crimean War, died. In 1961 construction began on the Berlin Wall during the night.

Today is the birthday of Alfred Hitchcock, director of over 50 films including Rebecca, Rear Window, Psycho and North by Northwest. Born in 1899, he once said "If it's a good movie, the sound could go off and the audience would still have a perfectly clear idea of what was going on."
