Aviators, insulin and the weather

In today's forecast we are expecting sunny spells but a few afternoon showers. Also westerlies.

It's a three-clothing layer day today with a high of 15 and an overnight low of 8 degrees. Humidity is 85 per cent.

Low tide is at 12.30pm and high tide is at 6.50pm. There's a sea swell of .2m with a sea temperature of 15 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.20pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 11am and 12.30pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1953 an armistice ended fighting in the Korean War. After lengthy negotiations, representatives of North Korea and the United Nations signed an armistice on the ceasefire line between North and South Korea.

In 1963 pioneer aviator George Bolt died. George was an outstanding figure in the development of commercial aviation in this country. Among his many achievements were taking New Zealand's first aerial photographs in 1912 and delivering its first official airmail in 1919.

In world history on this day in 1909 Orville Wright set a world record for staying aloft in an airplane–one hour, 12 minutes and 40 seconds. In 1921 Canadians Sir Frederick Banting and Charles Best isolated insulin at the University of Toronto.

In 2002 the largest air show disaster in history occurred when a Sukhoi Su-27 fighter crashed during an air show at Lviv, Ukraine, killing 85 and injuring more than 100 others.

Today is the birthday of Scottish writer Thomas Campbell. Born in 1777, he once said "To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die."
