Roadside dumping of rubbish in Oropi is getting Tauranga residents fired up.

A huge pile of rubbish was dumped at Lloyd's Lane in Oropi last night and the residents aren't happy.

'No one would do that in a residential area and dump it on a doorstep,” says one resident who contacted SunLive.

'We have people dumping rubbish all the time, it's something that we see quite often and this lot looks like boxes of rubbish.”

'We are quite often ringing the council to let them know that there is rubbish that needs collecting. It takes them awhile to come and pick it up but they do eventually. At least a couple of days.

'We choose to live in the country for clean living, we don't want people's rubbish dumped on our doorstep.”

Western Bay of Plenty District Council says its contractors will clean up the mess and go through the debris and try to identify those responsible.

'Like a lot of rural areas, the Western Bay of Plenty district has a problem where people dump rubbish on quiet rural roads," says enviromental solid waste team leader Ilze Kruis.

'The council has had enough and is aiming to identify and fine those partaking in this particularly nasty habit up to $500 under the Litter Act.

'When we clean up illegally dumped rubbish our contractors go through what is collected with a view to try and identify the culprits and fine them,” says Ilze.

'We need the help of residents and encourage anyone who sees someone illegally dumping rubbish to take down car registration numbers, as well as any photos they can safely take, and pass on this information by phoning the council on 0880 Trashy or emailing [email protected].”
