In today's forecast we are expecting a fine day but with showers developing tonight. Also southwesterlies.

Low tide is at 10.50am and high tide is at 5.20pm. There's a sea swell of .4m with a sea temperature of 15 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.18pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1981 Anti-Springbok protesters and anti-tour demonstrators invaded Hamilton's Rugby Park, forcing the abandonment of the Springboks–Waikato match.

In world history on this day in 326 Emperor Constantine refused to carry out traditional pagan sacrifices. In 1394 Charles VI of France issued a decree for the general expulsion of Jews from France. In 1799 on his way back from Syria, Napoleon Bonaparte defeated the Ottomans at Aboukir, Egypt.

In 1845 China granted Belgium equal trading rights with Britain, France and the United States. In 1850 gold was discovered in the Rogue River in Oregon, extending the quest for gold up the Pacific coast. In 1909 French aviator Louis Bleriot became the first man to fly across the English Channel in an airplane.

In 1943 Italian Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini was overthrown in a coup. In 1944 Allied forces began the breakthrough of German lines in Normandy. In 1978 the first test-tube baby, Louise Brown, was born in Oldham, England. In 1984 Svetlana Savitskaya became the first woman to perform a space walk.

Today is the birthday of American longshoreman and philosopher Eric Hoffer. Born in 1902, he once said "You can never get enough of what you don't need to make you happy."
