A fine, cold winter day

In today's forecast we are expecting a fine day with westerly breezes.

Low tide is at 10am and high tide is at 4.20pm. There's a sea swell of .4m with a sea temperature of 15 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.17pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 8.30 and 10.30pm.

In NZ history on this day in 2000 a New Zealand soldier was killed in Timor-Leste. Private Leonard Manning was the first New Zealander killed in combat since the Vietnam War.

In world history on this day in 1505 on their way to India, a group of Portuguese explorers sacked the city-state of Kilwa. In 1567 Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned and forced to abdicate her throne to her one-year-old son James VI.

In 1929 the Kellogg–Briand Pact, which renounced war as an instrument of foreign policy, went into effect.

Signatory states promised not to use war to resolve 'disputes or conflicts of whatever nature or of whatever origin they may be, which may arise among them.”

Today is the birthday of aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart. Born in 1897, she once said "The most effective way to do it, is to do it".
