Cold, cloudy week ahead

In today's forecast we are expecting a fine morning then afternoon cloudy periods with a chance of showers. Westerlies will be dying out in the evening.

It's a three-clothing layer day today with a high of 14 and an overnight low of 4 degrees. Humidity is 91 per cent.

Low tide is at 9am and high tide is at 3.30pm. There's a sea swell of .4m with a sea temperature of 16 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.18pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 8 and 10pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1851 the Maria was wrecked near Cape Terawhiti. Twenty-six lives were lost when the barque Maria was wrecked near Cape Terawhiti. This provided more ammunition for Wellington settlers who were trying to convince the government of the need for a lighthouse.

In 1952 Yvette Williams leapt for gold at Helsinki. Yvette Williams (later Corlett) won the long jump to become New Zealand's first female Olympic medallist.

In world history on this day in 1829 William A. Burt patented his 'typographer,” an early typewriter. In 1865 William Booth founded the Salvation Army. In 1903 the Ford Motor Company sold its first automobile, the Model A. In 1995 two astronomers, Alan Hale in New Mexico and Thomas Bopp in Arizona, almost simultaneously discovered a comet.

Today is the birthday of British aviator Arthur Whitten Brown. Born in 1886 he once wrote "That's the best way to cross the Atlantic. I supposed lots of people will do it now".
