Top two power through to Baywide final

The two top dogs after Baywide club rugby's round robin competition, Te Puke Sports and Te Puna, have powered through to next week's grand final with convincing semifinal wins.

Te Puke ended Mt Maunganui's hopes of defending their title with a commanding 32-6 home triumph at Murray Salt Stadium. The championship favourites, who travelled through the second round unbeaten, always looked in control of the encounter, though with just a 14-6 halftime lead had not put the game to bed.

They got the job done in some style in the second spell though with 18 unanswered points. Mount's effort never flagged but there were simply no pathways for them through the indomitable Te Puke defence.

Finals debutants Te Puna will join Te Puke in next week's decider after disposing of Tauranga Sports 39-17 at Maramatanga Park.

Having fallen a point short to the central city boys in their regular season encounter five weeks ago it was sweet revenge for Te Puna, who avoided the mistake they made last time of allowing Tauranga to ease out to a substantial halftime lead and leaving themselves just too much ground to make up.

Coin toss win

I was at the Division 1 semi-final on Saturday in Rotorua Kahukura vs Judea. After a fantastic game and full time came it was 27 all, 20 minutes extra time and still 27 all, the referee calls for a coin toss and Kahukura win. The referee followed the BOP Rugby play-off rules no dispute there, but my concern is why are the NZRFU and BOP rules different. Judea scored most tries, scored first and beat Kahukura in round robin and then a coin toss, pretty heartbreaking for the players and supporters who actually were very good about it. What would happen if Te Puke and Te Puna draw this weekends prem final after extra time A COIN TOSS? I think not. Come on BOP rugby time to change the play off rules to a fairer system.
