Community detention for fatal hunting shooting

Gordon Leech was fatally shot on Easter Monday.

A 37-year-old man who shot and killed a Katikati man in a hunting accident at Easter has been sentenced to community detention.

Quentin McCreedy shot 57-year-old Gordon Leech at a range of about 30 metres thinking he was shooting a deer.

The incident happened in the Kaimai Mamaku Range on Easter Monday.

McCreedy was with a companion and Mr Leech was hunting alone.

McCreedy pleaded guilty to careless use of a firearm causing death.

He was sentenced in the Hamilton District Court to six months' community detention, with a night time curfew, one year's supervision, 200-hours of community work and ordered to pay reparation of $10,000.

He should have gone to prison and banned from ever possessing a firearm for life.
