Armed police and police dog squads have been spotted near Mount Maunganui, as police attend an incident in the area.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE hotline says police have been spotted in the area throughout the morning.

'I first noticed three police cars parked on strange angles on Maunganui Road, near the golf course.

'When I came back past at 6am, there was a dog squad by the harbour bridge, one further down the road and another by the golf course.”

A police media spokesperson says it's in relation to an incident.

'Police are responding to an incident in the Mount Maunganui area.

'An update will be provided as soon as possible.”
