Fine week ahead in the Bay

In today's weather we are expecting fine spells, then a few showers from the afternoon. Also westerlies.

It's a two-clothing layer day today with a high of 16 and an overnight low of 5 degrees. Humidity is 94 per cent.

High tide is at 9.30am and low tide is at 3.40pm. There's a sea swell of 0.1m with a sea temperature of 16 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.03pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 7 and 10am.

In NZ history on this day in 1938 electric trains came to Wellington. On July 2 1938, Minister of Railways Dan Sullivan and Wellington Mayor Thomas Hislop officially opened the electrified rail line between central Wellington and the northern suburb of Johnsonville.

In world history on this day in 1776 the Continental Congress resolved with the Declaration of Independence that the American colonies 'are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States.” In 1822 Denmark Vesey was executed in Charleston, South Carolina, for planning a massive slave revolt.

In 1937 American aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart disappeared in the Central Pacific during an attempt to fly around the world.

In 1967 the U.S. launched Operation Buffalo in Vietnam. In 1976 North and South Vietnam were officially reunified.

Today is the birthday of German novelist and poet Hermann Hesse. Born in 1877 he once wrote "Without words, without writing and without books there would be no history, there could be no concept of humanity."
