In NZ history on this day in 1918 the steamer Wimmera was sunk by a German mine.
The Wimmera, bound from Auckland to Sydney, struck a mine laid north of Cape Maria van Diemen in 1917 by the German raider Wolf. Twenty-six of its 151 passengers and crew died.

In 1987 A.J. Hackett bungy jumped from the Eiffel Tower. The speed skier and bungy pioneer planned the 110 metre leap meticulously.
His dozen-strong team hid on the tower overnight and Hackett jumped at dawn. He described it as ‘one small step for a man, a bloody great leap for the adventure tourism industry'.
In world history on this day in 1945 the U.N. Charter was signed by 50 nations in San Francisco, California.
Today is the birthday of American novelist Pearl S. Buck. Born in 1892, Pearl once wrote "The secret of joy in work is contained in one word - excellence. To know how to do something well is to enjoy it".
