Man in deep water after fleeing police

The alleged offender, a 27-year-old, swum into the harbour to escape from police.

A Tauranga man has been arrested and charged with assault and escaping from police, after attempting to flee by swimming into the harbour.

A police media spokesperson says the incident happened around 11.45pm on Friday.

'Police received a report that a male had been punched by another male on Hamilton Street, Tauranga.

'The alleged offender, a 27-year-old, has swum into the harbour to escape from police.

'Coastguard was notified and police went out with them, uplifting the male from the water around 1.45am.

'Ambulance crew were called in to check the male was okay.

'He was arrested and charged with assault and escapes from police and is due to appear at Tauranga District Court on June 18.”

The incident is the second of the same nature to have occurred within the past year, with another man having attempted a similar escape method from police in September last year.
