D-Day and chilly night

The weather forecast today is for long fine spells. A few showers, mainly in the afternoon and westerlies turning southerly in the early evening.

High tide is at 12.10pm and low tide is at 6.20pm. There's a sea swell of 0.3m this morning with a sea temperature of 17 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 5 and 7pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1823 a Wesleyan mission was established. Samuel Leigh and William White established Wesleydale, a Wesleyan (Methodist) mission station at Kaeo.

Leigh was friendly with Samuel Marsden of the Church Missionary Society and the two missions worked closely together.

In 1996 New Zealand's first wind farm became operational. Commissioned by Genesis Energy, New Zealand's first commercial wind farm opened in the windy hills of Wairarapa.

In world history on this day in 1813 the United States invasion of Canada was halted at Stony Creek, Ontario.

In 1930 frozen foods were sold commercially for the first time. In 1944 D-Day: Operation Overlord landed 400,000 Allied American, British, and Canadian troops on the beaches of Normandy in German-occupied France. It was the largest seaborne invasion in history.

Today is the birthday of French author Pierre Corneille, who was born in 1606. He once wrote "Happiness seems made to be shared." It's also the birthday of British explorer Robert F. Scott, who was born in 1868. Before he died on the ice of Antarctica he wrote "We are very near the end, but have not and will not lose our good cheer."
