Southwesterlies bringing chill

In today's weather forecast we are expecting showers, possibly heavy and thundery, easing during the morning to fine spells. Southwesterlies also developing during the morning.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 19 and an overnight low of 8 degrees. Humidity is 100 per cent.

High tide is at 11.20am and low tide is at 5.30pm. There's a sea swell of .8m, with a sea temperature of 16 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 4.30 and 6.30pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1847 the Auckland Savings Bank opened for business. The New Zealand Banking Company, Auckland's first bank, had been wound up two years earlier.

In 1866 Te Kooti was deported to the Chathams. The future prophet and military leader was deported with Pai Mārire prisoners to the Chatham Islands. He had been accused of spying for the enemy while fighting with government troops.

In world history on this day in 1099 members of the First Crusade witnessed an eclipse of the moon and interpreted it as a sign they would recapture Jerusalem. In 1637 American settlers in New England massacred a Pequot Indian village. In 1783 Joseph and Jacques Montgolfier made the first public balloon flight.

In 1851 Harriet Beecher Stowe published the first installment of Uncle Tom's Cabin in The National Era. In 1967 the Six-Day War between Israel and Egypt, Syria and Jordan began. In 1968 Sirhan Sirhan shot Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy after Kennedy's victory in the pivotal California primary election.

Today is the birthday of Scottish philosopher and economist Adam Smith who was born in 1723. It's also the birthday of British author Dame Ivy Compton-Burnett. Born in 1884, she once wrote "Magnifying a matter is not the way to mend it."
