A Bay of Plenty liquor store has been destroyed after a fire tore through the building overnight.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at the Liquor Hut on Old Taupo Rd in Rotorua, just before midnight.

When the first crews arrived the building was engulfed in flames.

Three crews from Rotorua worked to extinguish the fire in the single storey building, says Fire and Emergency northern communications shift manager Craig Dally.

They stayed on site until 4am on Wednesday.

A fire investigator was also called to look into the cause of the blaze.

There was no indication anyone was inside the building or it was suspicious at this stage, he says.
