A machete was an offender's choice of weapon when he robbed a dairy of money overnight.

The armed robbery happened at about 7.30pm at a shop on Peach Grove Road in Hamilton.

The offender approached the counter and made off with a quantity of cash, fleeing on foot across the road.

A police dog unit has tracked the offender to Clyde Street, however, he was not located.

Acting Detective Sergeant Mike Handley believes someone in the community will recognise this man or know who he is.

'He has fled through neighbouring properties and we're sure someone will have seen him.

"Fortunately no one was hurt in this incident, however it's understandably extremely unsettling for shop workers and owners.

"We want the community to feel safe and this is not acceptable. If you were in the area this evening and saw this man or have any information – contact us immediately on (07) 858 6200.”

Information can also be passed on anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
