A man's evening walk was interrupted by a fence-baton-wielding duo who tried to steal his wallet.
The 65-year-old was out for a wander in the Centennial Drive area of Matamata on Tuesday evening, says Senior Sergeant Simon Cherry.
Shortly before 6pm, two men approached him with a fence baton.
"They demanded his wallet .. struck him, causing a small laceration to his head."
But the man fought his attackers off and they ran away - empty-handed - towards Rawhiti Drive.
The victim was said to have minor injuries, but an ambulance was called to check him over.
The man who hit him was described as a male Māori aged 18 or 19, wearing a dark green jumper.
Police had no description of the second man, who did not have a weapon.
Officers were asking around the area, says Simon, but the victim had walked home before reporting the incident, which meant there was a time delay.
Matamata Police would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and saw something which could help the investigation.
