Laying history at Papamoa

The capsule will be laid at PAP House from 11.30am and all members of public are welcome to attend.

A moment in history will be marked in the golfing world this weekend, as a time capsule gets laid in the ground in Papamoa.

The event is being co-ordinated by International Golf Associates New Zealand as a way of celebrating the achievements of the association so far.

IGANZ and Olna Inc director, Olna Ford says she's excited.

'You only get one opportunity to make history and put it somewhere where no one is going to touch it, so we thought let's put it in the ground.

'We live in a country where our land is so significant, and by laying this capsule it's our way of paying our respect and giving back to the land.”

She says it's her way of giving back to where it all started.

'In 2016 I showcased a long drive event, showcasing two international long drivers. I was approached by multiple long drivers, international media outlets and gained a lot of attention.

'This triggered New Zealand's first North Island vs South Island championship, which was hosted in Papamoa in February.”

The capsule is being laid at PAP House in Papamoa, a location Olna says is significant to the organisation.

'We wanted the location to be as close to where we had hosted this first event, but this strip of land was not suitable as it is going to be used for housing, so we wanted to get as close to it as possible.

'We thought perhaps instead we could put it somewhere that was special to us, because we had socialised and raised a glass or two there during the championship.

'It was the spot where everyone relaxed so for us having it at the PAP House was crucial.

'We've had a metal plate to go on top and secure the capsule, it's really been a huge effort from Tauranga businesses.”

Olna says two members of the New Zealand Long Blacks will be there to celebrate the occasion along with city councillors and members of public.

'We've got Gareth Campbell, who has the fastest swing speed in our group and Paul West, such a level-headed guy who always performs to the best of his ability.

'Council will be also be there to make things more official and it's being well supported by generous local businesses who have sponsored it all happening.

'We've got some pretty special things going inside it including lanyards and ribbons with dates of all our events and that sort of stuff.

'A lot of people have praised what we are doing and think it will be fantastic in years to come when they dig this back up.”

The capsule will be laid at 11.30am and all members of public are welcome to attend.
