One of the Bay's own has joined the line-up of Kiwi ‘celebs' who are stepping out of their comfort zones to support Parent to Parent's annual art auction.

This year the auction is titled Kiwi Celebs Create for a Cause.

Those trading up their day jobs for a canvas include Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Jack Tame, Kelvin Cruickshank, Cecilia Robinson, Suzanne Paul, Jax Hamilton, Jason Kerrison, and the creators of NZ's top YouTube channel Rainbow Learning.

In the Bay of Plenty, Whakatane District councillor, former Greens MP, activist and political commentator, Nándor Tánczos, has also put his hand up to be a part of it all.

'The piece I've done is a brief exploration of the notion of human free-will, the idea that we create our own destiny but within defined constraints, subject to both will and chance,” he says.

'It is also a hymn of praise to Yah Rastafari.”

Nandor says while the process was lumpy at first, the piece has become something he is proud of.

'I started a work, went quite a long way down it, only to realise it was crap. When I began again it flowed better, and the layers of the work kind of unfolded.

'Raising children is always a challenge but having a child with a disability must add all kinds of pressures and stresses to a family.

'The idea of a network that works with all family members to support them and link them to other people is something I am happy to get behind.”

Parent to Parent spokesperson Sue Pairaudeau says their team is truly grateful to all who have contributed a piece.

'We're incredibly grateful to each of them for supporting our fundraiser.

'They even sent us additional notes on what inspired their artwork, or how the challenge held unexpected positives for them personally,” she says.

'Our passion is supporting families facing the challenges of raising a child with a difference. With the majority of our staff and volunteers having walked in those shoes, our lived experience can help parents, brothers and sisters, navigate and plan their unique journey.

'When they feel informed, empowered and their voices heard, all family members flourish.”

The Kiwi Celebs Create for a Cause auction runs from May 21-31 on Trade Me. For more information see the Parent to Parent website.
