Laying the foundations to start again

Bay of Plenty Labour-list MP Angie Warren-Clark is praising the Coalition Government's Budget plan for 2018.

She says overall she's proud to be part of such a ‘transformational government'.

'I'm delighted not only with our fiscal management but also the spirit of kindness and heart that has been added into the Budget.

'Putting in money for health, education, justice and the environment were all key and I'm very excited and pleased about our direction.

'We've got lots more work to do but for me it's about the fact we have to address the past nine years. We had to lay the foundations to start again. It's a good straightforward plan.”

Angie says there are many parts to the plan which are close to her heart.

One of those, is improving domestic violence services.

'I'm delighted $76m has been put into frontline services, particularly for domestic violence services. We've had a decade without additional funding.

'I'm also really heartened that we have listened well to the sector around the working mechanisms across government that haven't necessarily talked to each other in the domestic violence space.

'Setting up a domestic violence agency, in whatever form that takes, to coordinate the work across government is crucial to moving forward in this space and eliminating violence.

'So not only is it great there will be more funding, but to hear the structures and mechanisms will be improved too is huge.”

She says education and health are two other parts to the budget which stand out for her.

'My mother is a teacher aide and I know there are a lot of other teacher aides doing a great job, so I'm excited in the education space that they will be getting help.

'I'm excited to see improvements for our midwives too. They are the backbones and experts in helping to deliver healthy and well children, so I'm excited these services will improve.”

Angie says having been a single-parent previously, she is excited to see more support for families.

'Putting that $75 extra into our lowest income families is going to be awesome.

'The other thing for me is thinking about my own mother, as well as our community here in the Bay of Plenty, which is quite an aged population.

'Winter heating payments are costly, even if you are quite wealthy it bites during this season. It's an issue not only for our elderly, but for beneficiaries as well, where people are not using their heating and they're keeping their houses colder which adds to that trickledown effect.

'People are getting illnesses, ending up in the health sector and people die because of cold, damp, houses.”

Angie says she is in the environment sphere a lot too, and is glad to see more funding for the sector.

'The extra spend into Department of Conservation is fantastic, it's been run down for too long. Our pest eradication needs to happen or we're going to lose big time in this country.

'In addition to this the $100m investment into the Green Fund around technology to improve the environment is so exciting.

'We've got a massive task ahead of us to achieve carbon-zero and we need our best brains on this.”

There's many ways the Budget will directly benefit Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty, says Angie.

'In terms of the families I've worked with over the past five years, I know in terms of a poverty-perspective this budget is absolutely going to benefit our own region as best as we could with what we had.

'We've got a budget that actually invests in our region. The opportunity to explore, bid and put in place actual real businesses will be amazing.

'We've also put some real strengths into Biosecurity. Our region has just dealt with PSA, we've had some real rough patches here and there, there's Kauri Dieback in the Coromandel and it's great we've ensured we have the protections and security for our most important industries.

'In general though putting money into health, education and other services that directly benefit people across the board is going to improve New Zealand as a whole.”

Looks like the spin doctors are working hard again and it sounds like she seriously believes the spin.

The spin from the previous Government has been uncovered and a lot has to be done to bring it back up to a standard that deteriorated over nine years especially in health.
