Pursuit ends in empty tanks and arrests

Two drivers have been arrested and charged after running out of fuel during a series of police pursuits throughout Tauranga.

A police spokesperson says the first of the two pursuits happened just after 1am.

'Police attempted to stop a vehicle on Waihi Road due to the manner of driving at about 1.17am.

'The vehicle refused to stop for police so police followed the fleeing driver for about 10 minutes.

'The Vehicle went through Tauriko, Gate Pa, before running out of petrol on SH36 near Taumata Road.

'The male driver was arrested without incident and the front passenger was also detained but released without charge.”

'A 25-year-old Tauranga man will appear on Driving Charges in Tauranga District Court today.”

The pursuit was also followed by another in Papamoa.

'Tauranga police stopped vehicle on Gloucester Road at about 3.30am.

'The vehicle initially stopped and driver suspected of giving false details. When asked to give up the keys the driver drove off at speed.

'A pursuit initiated and vehicle drove through to Papamoa, Kairua, Welcome Bay and back tracked a couple of times into Papamoa and Kairua.

'Eventually the vehicle came to a stop after running out of petrol on Arawata Ave and the driver was taken into custody.

'The driver, a 26-year-old man was apprehended without incident.

'He is charged with driving offences and had arrest warrants which were outstanding.”
