Low tide is at 1pm and high tide at 7.20pm. There's a sea swell of 1.3m, with a sea temperature of 19 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.27pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 3 and 6pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1864 in one of their first military operations, several hundred Pai Mārire warriors attacked a British redoubt at Te Mōrere (Sentry Hill) in Taranaki. Scores were killed and wounded.

In 1865 ex-Governor Robert FitzRoy, the second governor of New Zealand (1843-45), took his own life at his home in Surrey. Opinion on his governorship has always been divided.

In 1917 William Sanders received the Victoria Cross for bravery during a German U-boat attack on his ship. He became the first – and only – New Zealander to win the British Empire's highest military decoration in a naval action.

In world history on this day in 1789 George Washington was inaugurated as the first U.S. president. In 1975 Saigon fell as North Vietnamese forces gained control of the city.

The Vietnam War formally ended as South Vietnam unconditionally surrendered. In 1980 terrorists seized the Iranian Embassy in London.

Today is the birthday of country singer Willie Nelson. Born in 1933, he once said "Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you'll start having positive results," and "When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around."
