The weather forecast today is for a fine morning, then a few cloudy periods from the afternoon and southwesterlies.

High tide is at 9am and low tide at 3.20pm. There's a sea swell of .2m, with a sea temperature of 20 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.41pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 5 and 8pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1884 the first royal honour for a New Zealand woman was awarded.

The Royal Red Cross was awarded to Miss Alice Crisp, matron of Auckland Hospital, in a ceremony at Government House, Auckland.

In 1893 the state bought the Cheviot Estate. In the 1890s the Liberal government, especially Minister of Lands John McKenzie, were determined to ‘burst up' large estates for settlement by prospective small farmers, who were among its key supporters.

The first property purchased under this policy was the 34,300-ha Cheviot Estate in North Canterbury.

In 1967 Dave McKenzie won the Boston Marathon.

The 24-year-old McKenzie set a new course record of 2 hours 15 minutes 45 seconds in finishing ahead of American Tom Laris and Yutaka Aoki of Japan. He was the first New Zealander to win the Boston Marathon.

In world history on this day in 1764 the English Parliament banned the American colonies from printing paper money. In 1824 English poet Lord George Gordon Byron died of malaria at age 36 while aiding Greek independence.

In 1880 a Times war correspondent telephoned a report of the Battle of Ahmed Khel, the first time news was sent from a field of battle in this manner. In 1934 Shirley Temple appeared in her first movie.

In 1960 baseball uniforms began displaying player's names on their backs. In 1971 Russia launched its first Salyut space station. In 1977 Alex Haley received a special Pulitzer Prize for his book Roots.

In 1982 NASA named Sally Ride to be the first woman astronaut.

In 1993 the FBI ended a 51-day siege by storming the Branch Davidian religious cult headquarters in Waco, Texas.

In 1995 a truck bomb exploded in front of the federal building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people.

Today is the birthday of Ole Evinrude. Born in 1877, Ole was the inventor of the first successful outboard motor.
