A 7.3 magnitude earthquake has struck east of Raoul Island in the Kermadec Trench, north-west of Tauranga.
The quake generated sea level changes and prompted a tsunami warning, which has since been cancelled.
The quake struck shortly before 7am and had a focal depth of 16 kilometres.
GeoNet is reporting the quake was felt along the east coast of the North Island.
