Rahui remains in place

Tauranga Moana Iwi Customary Fisheries Trust chairman Penetaka Dickson says the rahui placed over areas affected by the oil coming from the stricken ship Rena remains in place.

The rahui extends from the shoreline between Bowentown through to Maketu out to Tuhua/Mayor Island and Motiti. It now includes Tauranga harbour as well.

A beach clean-up crew working on Papamoa Beach today.

He says the nature of an oil slick is that it moves with the weather and tides on the surface so this rahui moves correspondingly.

It is important for people to realise that in those areas that have been impacted and cleaned up there remains a strong likelihood that seafood is contaminated.

'We are urging caution until we know more.”

He said the rahui has been put in place for practical and safety reasons.

'Firstly, to discourage people from taking and eating Kaimoana from affected areas.

'Secondly, we seek to reduce the risk of people transferring pollutants from one area to another.”

Tauranga Moana Iwi held a Karakia on the beaches of Mount Maunganui at 9am this morning to reinforce the continuation of the rahui and the Rena recovery effort.

I know I will be fishing the harbour in the weekend. If the fish are alive they will be fine, will inspect the gut though!

We need to remember

that there is hundreds of square miles out there to fish in that are not being affected. If you want to go fishing where there is clean edible fish, book onto a charterboat, they will take you to great fishing spots and you'll be able to feed your family with clean, fresh fish

What gives Penetaka Dickson the right to tell people where and when they can fish! It stands to reason that it would be unwise to go fishing in the area, I don't see how this person can tell me that I can't. He has no power over me and will be told to go and take a very long walk off a very short wharf if he even tries.
