Vincent Van Gogh and today's weather

Today we are expecting cloud and the chance of a morning shower, clearing to fine in the afternoon. Also light winds.

It's a one-clothing-layer day today with a high of 24 and an overnight low of 16 degrees. Humidity is 95 per cent.

Low tide is at 12.50pm and high tide at 7pm. There's a sea swell of about .5m, with a sea temperature of 21 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 7.10pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 11am and 1pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1940 was the funeral procession for Prime Minister Savage. New Zealand's first Labour prime minister, Michael Joseph Savage, died in office on March 27 1940. His body lay in state at Parliament for two days before his funeral cortège, which was more than 1.6 km long, set off for the railway station at 9am on March 30.

In 2004 historian Michael King, aged 58, and his wife Maria Jungowska died in a car accident in South Waikato. King's Penguin history of New Zealand became the most popular book of the year, and was the Readers' Choice at the 2004 Montana New Zealand Book Awards.

In world history on this day in 1858 Hyman L. Lipman of Philadelphia patented the pencil with an eraser attached on one end. In 1981 President Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded in Washington, D.C. In 1987 Vincent Van Gogh's Sunflowers was bought for $39.85 million.

Today is the birthday of Sir John Hawkins.Born in 1719, he was the author of the first history of music. It's also the birthday of English novelist Anna Sewell, who was born in 1820 and wrote Black Beauty. And it's the birthday of Vincent Van Gogh, the Dutch impressionist artist who was born in 1853.
