Easter on the field

The Easter Weekend second round of Baywide Club Rugby kicks off this Thursday night under lights at Murray Salt Stadium before games on both Good Friday and Saturday across the Bay of Plenty.

The Te Puke Sports and Tauranga Sports game is one of many which is set to be hair-raising. The home game sees Te Puke Sports face long their standing rivals.

Te Puke will be on the hunt for redemption following a last minute 22-20 loss to Greerton Marist last weekend. Tauranga Sports will be hoping to make it two from two.

Te Puke Sports head coach Matt Wallis says the team is aware of the need to make some improvements.

'Improving our penalty count is a big thing for us. We gave too many away against Greerton Marist, so just little things we can adjust as a team.

'On attack I am happy where we are at but it is our defence and our penalty count that will be our main focus.

'We love playing at home, especially on a Thursday night. The boys love it and lift a level when they are playing at home, which is always a huge positive.”

Tauranga Sports head coach Euan Mackintosh says his team will continue to build a winning culture.

'It is important that we consistently do the small things right and aim to improve week in week out. We will be continuing to ensure we focus on our game management and getting this right.

'This week a big work on for us is our discipline at crucial moments in the match, it will be important for us to improve this especially against a side such as Te Puke,” said Mackintosh.

Another game to look forward too will be Marist St Michael's and Waimana.

Marist St Michael's kicked the season off with a win, edging out Waikite 22-20, however Waimana were taught a lesson when they were outgunned by Te Teko in their first Division One competition match last week.

Head Coach Mike Lewis is confident his team will continue to progress this weekend with the return of players from injury.

'We need more time together at training to iron out exactly how we want to play. Our key focus will be working out exactly how we play best together, learning from each other and how we all fit into the game plan.

'We have a pretty young group this year, so we just need to continue to grow, and improve week by week,” says Lewis.

Lewis acknowledges the scrum and discipline as areas he would like to see improvement.

'We need to focus on our scrum for sure. We have got the size, but just need to start working smarter in that area. Discipline is another area we can improve on, learning the ref through the game and changing style if need be,” says Lewis.

'We're looking forward to hosting Waimana, they really looked after us in the respective match last season, so we're keen to put on a good night for them.”

Waimana head coach Michele Wallace was unavailable for comment when contacted. His side performed well last season, earning their promotion into Division One.

Last weekend an experienced Te Teko side proved to have the upper hand in the Eastern Bay of Plenty clash seeing Waimana be taught a staunch lesson from their local rivals.

However Waimana are not a side to be taken lightly and are likely to bounce back and be an aggressive and competitive opponent for an inform Marist St Michael's.
