The fire service was called to a stretch of beach near Banks Ave at around 6pm on Saturday because of a fire lit among the sand dunes.
Firemen first looked around the area of beach near Banks Ave with two firemen then walking the beach looking for the fire while the fire truck followed along Marine Parade.
A small fire lit among the dunes was found next to a small blue tent. A local resident had lit it and was sitting there with two dogs.
The wind had carried the smell of fire and smoke up onto Marine Parade.
A total fire ban is in place along the coastal strip in Tauranga.
This applies to all land on the seaward side of Marine Parade, Ocean Beach Road, Maranui Street, and Papamoa Beach Road.
People can take a gas barbeque to any park, reserve or foreshore, but open fires are not permitted on reserves.
The firemen put out the fire by dragging the smoking logs down the beach to the water's edge, before extinquishing the remaining embers.

("A local resident had lit it and was sitting there with two dogs.") should darn well know two things:1] that there is a total fire ban and 2] how much work has gone into keeping the sand dunes planted and healthy!. Throw the fines, as well as the book, at the silly beggar......!!
What a tw^t!
