The guys behind the red truck

They come hurtling around the corner in the big red fire truck and suddenly there's hope. The guys in red, however, today aren't walking into a blazing mess, but instead educating future fire brigades.

The open day, which continues again tomorrow, will see police officers and rescue showing off their skills to the public.

Today the fire fighters had their turn by letting others try on the equipment, sit in a fire engine and see if they have what it takes to volunteer.

Station officer Jeff Francis says not everyone has what it takes to be a volunteer fire fighter - but there are plenty of Kiwis who do.

'It's dangerous, challenging and boundary pushing. It takes strength, commitment, character, heart and a desire to make a difference - you need to be made of the right stuff - but the rewards are immense.”

He says the open day is about the public learning who their emergency are and being educated in what they do.

'The brigade is running thin. People moving away and with other commitments means the volunteers are looking for new recruits for the first time since 2015.”

The volunteer brigade operates in support of the paid New Zealand Fire and Emergency Service at Tauranga's station on Cameron Rd. They train every Tuesday night and respond at the drop of a hat should disaster strike.

The brigade is also looking for volunteers to help with operational support.

Members of public will also get to go behind the scenes at Tauranga Police Station during their public open day on Sunday, March 11, from 10am-12pm.
