On Sunday, March 11, 22 teams from schools along the Papamoa coastal strip, Te Puke and Otamarakau will be competing in the Comvita 2018 Paengaroa Top School Games.

Organised and hosted annually by Paengaroa School, the event will see pupils from Years 5,6,7 and 8 competing against each other.

The schools represented are Otamarakau School, Te Puke Primary, Maketu School, Te Ranga School, Te Puke Intermediate, Pongakawa School, Rangiuru School, Pukehina School, Te Matai School, Paengaroa School, Fairhaven School, Golden Sands School, Tahatai Coast School and Te Akau Ki Papamoa School.

The day starts at 8am with a White Elephant event.

'It's like a giant version of a carboot or garage sale,” says Paengaroa School principal Bruce Lendrem. 'Held in the multi-purpose room.”

Following this the Comvita 2018 Paengaroa Top School Games kicks off at 10am.

Teams compete in nine events sponsored by local businesses.

The nine events are the Cavanagh Panel, Paint and Glass Horizontal Bungy, the Te Puke Vet Centre Leaky Bucket, the Bunnings Te Puke Magic Carpet Ride, the Trustpower Ltd Sands of Time, the Shawn Williamson Building Ltd – Firewise – 'get down, get low, get out”, the Cavanagh Truck Spares Pole Balance, the Fruitfed Supplies PGG Wrightson Four Legged Bottle Game, the Eastpack Sponge Bob Square Pants event and the Conway and Carpenter Electrical Ltd Dragon Boats event.

Bruce and his team have been setting up the event over the last few days.

'Our marquee got stolen from the AMP Showgrounds after the AMP Show,” says Bruce. 'About three weeks ago. It was wet so they left it out to dry and when they went to take it down it was gone.

'The Maketu Gentlemen's Club have very kindly lent us their one.”

The large marquee will be used as a food tent by the school's Parent Teacher Association, with about 30 trestles, barbecue and cookers set up to feed the more than 1000 people expected at the games.

The events have been split into Years 5/6 and Years 7/8 with prizes for each of the two age groups. The event allows ten minutes per game with five minutes between the games for moving the teams on to the next game.

At lunchtime there will be a cheerleading display with about 12 cheerleading teams from the schools taking part.

The games is an important fundraiser, and takes about 60 volunteers to run. The teams that win the Year 5/6 shield and the Year 7/8 shield become the top school team for 2018.
