This day in NZ history in 1890 the Sutherland Falls were first climbed. Young surveyor William Quill needed only basic climbing equipment, to scale the side of the ‘great Sutherland waterfall' which cascades for 580 m near Milford Sound. In 1956 on this day Opo the friendly dolphin died.

'Opononi George' or ‘Opo' was a young female bottlenose dolphin who warmed the hearts of thousands of people at Opononi in Hokianga Harbour between June 1955 and March 1956.

This day in world history in 1959 the Barbie doll was unveiled at a toy fair in New York City. In 1964 the first Ford Mustang rolled off the Ford assembly line. In 1967 Svetlana Alliluyeva, Joseph Stalin‘s daughter, defected to the United States.

Today is the birthday of Yuri Gagarin, the Russian cosmonaut who was also the first man to orbit the Earth.

He was born in 1934. It's also the birthday of Bobby Fischer, who was born on this day in 1943, and was the first American world chess champion.

And it's the birthday of NZ novelist Keri Hulme who was born in 1947 and wrote 'The Bone People'.

Keri Hulme once wrote "'A family can be the bane of one's existence. A family can also be most of the meaning of one's existence. I don't know whether my family is bane or meaning, but they have surely gone away and left a large hole in my heart.”
