Eighty-five years of Monopoly

This day in NZ history 1842 was New Zealand's first official execution. Seventeen year old Maketū Wharetōtara was hung at the corner of Queen and Victoria streets in Auckland for the 1841 murder of Elizabeth Roberton, her two children, and two other adults.

In 1941 on this day New Zealand troops arrived in Greece. When the Germans attacked Greece on April 6, they quickly outflanked the Allied defenders, who were forced into a hurried retreat down the peninsula. In 1988 Cyclone Bola, one of the most damaging cyclones to hit New Zealand, struck Hawke's Bay and Gisborne–East Cape.

This day in world history 322 BC the Greek philosopher Aristotle died. In 1876 Alexander Graham Bell was granted a patent for the telephone.

In 1906 Finland became the third country to give women the right to vote, decreeing universal suffrage for all citizens over 24. However, it barred those persons who are supported by the state. In 1912 French aviator, Henri Seimet flew non-stop from London to Paris in three hours.

In 1933 the board game Monopoly was invented. In 1933 the film King Kong premiered in New York City. In 1979 Voyager 1 reached Jupiter.

Today is the birthday of Norwegian poet Rolf Jacobsen. Born in 1907 he once wrote about clouds - "The clouds roll on. Silent as sleepwalkers the clouds keep coming from infinity, bank behind bank and line after line, and change colours on the earth."
