Speed likely cause to highway crash

Western Bay of Plenty Police were called to three injury accidents on Sunday.

Police say a crash that blocked State Highway 2 at Whakamarama for two hours on Sunday afternoon was caused by a driver swerving across the centre line to avoid a car turning right into Parklands Produce.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager acting Senior Sergeant Wayne Hunter says the offending driver was possibly speeding and distracted.

'They lost control, crossed the centre lane impacting with an eastbound van.

'All occupants of both vehicles were transferred to Tauranga hospital.”

Injuries of those involved have been downgraded from serious to moderate, says Wayne.

Diversions for light vehicles were in place for two hours while oil and debris was cleaned up.

At 7.50pm on SH36, a car U-turning between Williams Road and Taumata Road was involved in a collision with an oncoming vehicle. A woman passenger was taken to hospital.

There will be a statement from police later about that accident, says Wayne.

Also on Sunday evening a motorcyclist suffered minor injuries in a collision with a ute on the Golden Sands Drive and Wairakei Avenue roundabout after 8pm.

On Saturday afternoon police were called to a two car collision in Taniwha Place near the Wairoa River where a tourist driver was on the wrong side of the road. No one was injured.

Speed not the cause!

Speed is never the 'cause' of a crash, it is the driver with his/her foot on the accelerator. You can not say that a distraction is the cause either, it is the driver that allows themselves to become distracted (unless there was some other causal factor - e.g. a bee files in the window and stings the driver etc) that leads to loss of control of the vehicle.

Driver behaviour...

...in this country is appalling. Drove back yesterday from Wanganui and only saw one traffic cop (Rotorua) the whole way- and the drive is around 750km's. Driving we witnessed was speeding, cutting corners, dangerous overtaking, failure to give way, going over the centre line even on straight bits of road, aggressive tailgating, and definitely no slowing down for roadworks or towns. Our roads are a frightening place to be. We need a more visible police presence and heftier penalties otherwise nothing will change.
