Submarine facts and today's weather

This day in NZ history 1902 was the end of the battle of Langverwacht Hill. Twenty-four New Zealanders were killed in this battle during the South African (Boer) War.

A total of 230 New Zealanders died while serving in New Zealand's first overseas war. In 1912 the SS Earnslaw was launched on Lake Wakatipu.

For more than 50 years after it was launched, SS Earnslaw has carried freight and people to and from remote lakeside settlements.

In world history on this day in 1821 Mexico gained independence from Spain. In 1908 Japan officially agreed to restrict emigration to the United States.

Today is the birthday of Irish engineer John Phillip Holland. Born in 1841, he was the inventor of the modern submarine. It is also the birthday of Wilhelm Carl Grimm, who with his brother, compiled fairy tales.

Born in 1786, he wrote "He who helped you when you were in trouble ought not afterwards be despised by you."
