Police investigating a homicide in Opotiki yesterday have arrested a 27-year-old Opotiki man this afternoon and charged him with motor vehicle offences.

He is assisting Eastern Bay of Plenty Police with the homicide inquiries, says Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen.

The man is due in Whakatane District Court tomorrow and it is likely he will face other charges then.

A large contingent of investigators remain working on the scene examination and related inquiries into the homicide.

Formal identification of the deceased is underway this afternoon.

A murder investigation was launched after a woman was found dead in Wharf Street, Opotiki around 1.15pm on Monday. Police responding to a reported domestic incident found the woman at a residential property near the CBD.

'It appears the deceased sustained injuries to her face and arms that have been fatal,” says Greg.

Reports on social media say police were on Monday looking for a black sedan driven by a sole male of Maori descent aged in his 30s. Police had cordons in place and were stopping all black vehicles in the area.
