It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 27 and an overnight low of 20 degrees. Humidity is 85 per cent.

High tide is at 2.40pm and low tide at 9pm. Sea temperature is 21 degrees, and there's a sea swell of 0.9m. Sunset is at 8.30pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 7.30pm and 9.30pm.

This day in NZ history in 1844, Governor FitzRoy arrived to investigate the Wairau incident.

Faced with demands for revenge after 22 settlers were killed in an incident in the Wairau Valley, Governor Robert FitzRoy decided that Māori had been provoked by the unreasonable actions of the Europeans.

In 1984 on this day, floods devastated Southland.

A record one-day total of up to 84.8 mm of rain caused extensive surface flooding in the streets of Invercargill, Riverton, Ōtautau, Tūātapere and Bluff.

This day in world history in 1788 a fleet of ships carrying convicts from England landed at Sydney Cove in Australia.

The day is since known as Australia's national day. In 1924 Petrograd was renamed Leningrad.

In 2005 Condoleezza Rice was appointed to the post of secretary of state. The post made her the highest ranking African-American woman ever to serve in a U.S. presidential cabinet.

Today is the birthday of French philosopher, Claude Helvétius. He was born in 1715 and once wrote To limit the press is to insult a nation; to prohibit reading of certain books is to declare the inhabitants to be either fools or slaves."
