Truck’s fuel leaks into river

Around 200 litres of fuel has made its way into a Bay of Plenty river after a landslip caused a truck to crash.

New Zealand Fire Service Northern Communications shift manager Jaron Phillips says the truck hit fallen rocks, which were blocking State Highway 2.

'The slip happened east of Whakatane, just after midnight – the truck went over the bank and into the Waimana River.

'The driver received minor injuries.”

Jaron says traffic was being diverted, due to the blockage and the rockface was still unstable.

A crane was brought in to remove the truck and the Bay of Plenty Regional Council is assessing the fuel leak into the river.
