Planned upgrades for Baycourt

A temporary closure will be in place at the Baycourt Community and Arts Centre over the summer while planned construction is carried out.

To allow for the work to be carried out safely, Baycourt's foyer will be closed to the public from midday today and will reopen at 9am on Thursday February 8.

Baycourt manager Megan Peacock Coyle says the focus of the work is to soundproof the X Space in order to reduce noise transference between the performance space and the foyer.

'Soundproofing the X Space will enable Baycourt to hold two events at the same time without as much noise interference from the foyer, which will help increase the versatility of the centre and our capability when delivering shows.

'As a result of this soundproofing the foyer area will be expanded which will maximise the use of the space and create more room for patrons. We are also taking this opportunity to update and enhance the 1980s architecture of the building.”

While the foyer is closed Baycourt's ticketing office will relocate to the Terrace Rooms, directly behind the Tauranga Library. This area will be accessible from Durham, Hamilton and Wharf streets, from Monday, January 15.

During this time the main stairs outside the Baycourt foyer on Durham Street, leading down to the back of the library, may be closed to ensure public safety; however, adjacent to the Citizens Advice Bureau on Hamilton Street are stairs which can be accessed from the Baycourt lawn.

'We hope the foyer closure does not cause any inconvenience for the public, and the Baycourt team looks forward to welcoming you all back for a jam-packed year of exciting events in 2018.”

Alternatively, members of the public can purchase their tickets for all upcoming shows at Baycourt online via the Ticketek website at www.ticketek.co.nz or by phone on 0800 4 TICKET.

The plan is to demolish it, at least the "desire" to do so ... then why spend more money on it? This is jsut so wasteful of public monies on nonesense. Apparently the place has operated for some 30 years without issue, why now at "deaths-door" does it now become an issue?

When you are employing so many dead heads you have to find something (anything) for them to do - sound contamination is always going to be something that venues have to learn to work with - nothing new here. Your correspondents are 100% correct its worked acceptably for thirty odd years so why start messing about now! I believe those responsible should come out of their sanctums and tell us what its all about - if it were not for this august publication we would know nothing - now we know just enough to get our backs up!

Here's a suggestion

YES We need to have an Arts venue down town we just cant afford it..I suggest we flatten Baycourt and ask a international hotel chain to build a 5 start hotel of say 400 maybe 500 rooms with conference rooms Restaurants and some retail along Willow St etc etc on the site of the old TCC building . And ask them nicely to build a state of the art venue on the same space Baycourt is with the hotel above it The hotel only needs to be 3 or 4 storey and using the old TCC car park and the Harrington St car park there's plenty of space. Ohhh and why would the Hotel company do this .Because it makes sense and money TCC should be in favor because it wont cost the rate pay a lot of money...Probably never happen.
