A slip on the Waikareao Estuary walkway has raised concerns by frequent users of the popular track.
The 9km loop track outlines the Waikareao Estuary and is used by walkers, runners and cyclists.
A damaged section of the track has been recently identified at the Novella Place exit to the walkway.
Rusty Kane, a frequent user of the track, says the slip is a safety concern to the many different people who use it.
'School children and mothers with prams use it every day to access the sports fields, the kindergarten and the Waikareao Estuary from Novella Place to Kingswood Rd,” says Rusty.
'It's been a year and this track is still not fixed.”
Tauranga City Council parks and recreation manager Mark smith says the section was damaged during Cyclone Cook and Cyclone Debbie earlier this year.
'Since then it has been inspected and monitored regularly to ensure it is still safe.”
'Currently this track is on contract for maintenance,” says Mark. 'The repair to this section is a significant piece of work which requires detailed engineering and specific design.
'We're seeking an engineering design solution to repair this section of walkway due to the steep and erosive terrain, and soil type.”
He says staff are working having this solution by the end of the financial year.
'The majority of the track remains open, safe and accessible for all users,” says Mark.
'Visitors should proceed with caution and let us know if it deteriorates further.”

Mr Smith this is not a motorway so why all this technical prattle. It is a track so get a few posts.planks and a shovel and fix it. I can't believe all this waffle about such a minor problem. No wonder our rates keep increasing .
Engineers Report, Rubbish

Awaiting engineers report is away of saying oops. TCC use to heve it's own engineers and something like this had the problem solved quickly now it goes from one manager to another to another and then finally we need an engineers report. The day someone slips down and gets hurt it will be closed indefinitely and then big money thrown at it. I can remember seeing Rusty's first report and nothing down. Come on TCC EM's and workers get your acts together.

I've been letting them know this track has been deteriorating for over a year now :( I believe local tracks like this are not a priority of the TCC .. because the Mauao's base track slip happened way after this .. and was fixed as soon as possible ..
here we go again

We cannot fix the track as spending $$$$30 million on NEW BAUBLES comes first, i could not see TCC checking it regularly, they would have too hop out of their BRAND NEW UTE -CAR, to inspect it, and would then have to walk, my god this would be to much to consider, they would report back ,have a all day meeting, free lunch, and start again next day, NOBODY has a Brain in TCC to make a call as they might lose their job if they speak up, if someone slips on this, because of TCC negligence there might be something to say, my thoughts only on this,Sunlive won BEST NEWS in NZ, this is AWESOME,No1,Thankyou 10-4 out.phew.
Perhaps read the regs

The comments make me laugh. This isn't the 90's anymore. The national government has completely changed the regulatory conditions for business and local government. Gone are the days of a couple of planks of wood. But I guess it's easier to complain than to be constructive.

Health and safety regulations do NOT restrict, limit, inhibit the application of local body staff common sense, the application of their skills sets. Tauranga City Council employs many with the qualifications, admittedly a few less with the skills and a helluva lot less with the passion for their responsibilities that has them use their skills to better ensure best outcomes for our community. They do work in an intimidating, threatening environment and this is the biggest contributor to our employees failing to carry out tasks in a timely, fiscally responsible manner, preoccupied with covering their at risk backside! Sg1nz, if there were any genuine Health & Safety concerns, once a significant and real risk is identified, I thought they had an obligation to mitigate it! These are the staff and crazies that employ security staff on the base track of Mauao!

It's got nothing whatsoever to do with "National government" In earlier times, all tracks and huts were maintained by club working bees which doubled as important social events. Now many tramping clubs are reluctant to stage working bees for fear of OSH. This was all caused by "restructuring" - the brainwave of a LABOUR government, which later came to be known as Rogernomics after a LABOUR minister who ruined a lot of things to fix a few things. Now we live with the mess it all caused.
