A Brazilian tourist driving a rental vehicle was caught excessively speeding on State Highway One near Taupiri.

On Friday the man was doing 202km per hour in a 100kmh zone and was locked doing 195km/h going into 70km/h roadworks, while there was bad weather.

The male, who was on a honeymoon in New Zealand for a week, was arrested for dangerous driving and attended court later that day.

The judge convicted him and he was fined $1100 and received six months disqualification.

The rental vehicle contract was immediately cancelled and the rental company sent a transporter to uplift the vehicle. Those recovery costs were added to his bill.

'With all those factors into account (speed/wet road/roadworks) we could have had a huge disaster on our hands. Luckily he was stopped before a serious tragedy occurred on our roads,” says a Waikato police spokesperson.

'He is now the navigator and his new bride is the pilot. Just not in a GLC Class Merc. Perhaps a smart car would have been a better choice as his decisions weren't so smart.”

his Brazilian License from him. What's to stop him heading to the South Island and getting another rental car from a different rental firm and driving again??.
