AIMS Games Diary: Day Three

It's been another successful day at the intermediate aged AIMS Games taking place in sporting venues throughout Tauranga this week.

Organiser Vicki Semple says the tournament is going extremely well.

'The whole tournament has an amazing feel. All the schools are in great spirits and there is a wonderful atmosphere at all of the venues.”

Getting underway today will be the gym sports at ARGOS where Vicki says there will be some tough competition following a 30 percent increase in the entry numbers from last year's event.

Indoor bowls will also make their debut into the AIMS Games today, with competition taking place at Memorial Hall in Tauranga.

Berkley collects gold on court – Murrays Bay look to continue its six year domination of Waterpolo and defending Netball champs Te Puke lose chance of repeat performance.

There were also ideal conditions on the golf course, seeded players advanced through the tennis draw and basketball players christened the TECT Arena at Baypark's new courts.

'It's been a fantastic start for the team sports today with some really tough competition and some early upsets, which is what sport is all about,” says NZCT AIMS Games tournament director Vicki Semple.

'The talent and enthusiasm on show is astounding.”

Day one of competition at the NZCT AIMS Games badminton competition saw the boys take to the court for singles. This year proved to be a lot stronger with the quarter-finals particularly competitive and emotions running high throughout.

North Shore competitors E.J Briones and Anthony Chan of Murrays Bay Intermediate came through tough quarter final matches against players from Hamilton's, Berkley Middle School before meeting in the semi-finals and guaranteeing one from Murrays Bay a spot in the final.

Joining them in the semis was local hopeful Zak Anderson from Rotorua Intermediate and Dacmen Vong of Berkley Middle School who had passed without trouble to the semi finals.

The battle between Murrays Bay teammates Broines and Chan was a closely fort paddle with momentum swinging both ways. It was Broines who eventually came out on top winning in a deciding third set 21-11.

Joining him in the final was Vong, who proved to be too strong for local hopeful Anderson who would have to settle for the bronze medal match facing Chan.

The bronze medal match looked to be anyone's game with a close start, before Chan pulled away at the halfway interval to take the podium place.

In the final Vong again proved too strong for his opponent cruising to victory to collect the gold and put Berkley Middle School on the medal table in 2 comfortable sets 21-9 and 21-1.

Today the boys take court again, this time in the doubles competition with finals expected to be battled for at roughly 1pm.

Meanwhile Murrays Bay Intermediate was also in action at the pool as teams took to the water for the first day of competition in the NZCT AIMS GAMES Waterpolo. The six time AIMS champions showed their dominance in their first two games scoring 26 goals and conceding just one.

Top local team from Mt Maunganui Intermediate looked impressive with a 6-4 win over a tough Glen Eden side.

Auckland Diocesan also remain unbeaten after two games.

Play continues in the Waterpolo, held at Mt Maunganui's Baywave Aquatic Centre today at 8am when Murray's Bay take on Auckland counterparts Auckland Normal Intermediate.

Cobham Intermediate are off to a strong start in the girls competition of the Hockey after winning both their games while newcomers Bucklands Beach had a convincing win over Albany Junior High 7-1.

It was a hard contest between rival local sides Tauranga and Otumoetai Intermediate, with Otumoetai eventually winning 1-0.

In the boys' division newcomers Rosmini College had a convincing win over Otumoetai Intermediate 5-0.

As light rain showers fell, temperatures dropped and cold hands affected play at the Netball. 2010

Champions and local hopefuls Te Puke Intermediate had three losses after losing two key players to injury early on. Their chances at the A Grade is now gone.

Visitors Hutt Intermediate, new for 2011, collected two good wins over Cambridge and Woodland Intermediates.

Netball coordinator Jill Weldon lists Whakatane, Albany Jnr High School, Glen Eden, Newlands, Taupo, Peachgrove, Tauranga, Mt Maunganui, Northcross and Otumoetai as the strongest teams from day one.

Tauranga Intermediate Netballer Eden Pou is excited after day one.

'I loved playing against good teams,” says Eden.

'Being Year 7 and playing against bigger girls is cool, especially when we win.

'I loved it because we won our first three games today and our team spirit is good, I hope we can continue to win.”

Next door at the tennis organisers managed to get through the scheduled programme follow the midday weather that lost them 20 minutes to play.

While all the seeded players advanced through the draw, there was anticipation side of court as top seed Olivia Addis from Havelock North Intermediate dropped a set against local Aquinas College competitor Taylah Stack to win 6-1, 5-7, 6-1.

Weather isn't looking favourable for tomorrows draw with Boy's due to take the court at 8.30am for the quarter finals.

Conditions for the opening round of golf at Omokoroa were ideal, with calm, settled weather and the course in great condition with slick greens. This year's event has a field of 59 golfers playing off handicaps as low as 6.3 with several playing off single figure handicaps.

Among the highlights of the day were twos carded by three players, Auckland Normal Intermediates Joe Tiplady, Illminster's Dean Pohatu and Dexin Kong from Kristin School on Auckland's, North Shore.

Two Bay of Plenty players, Henry Spring from St Joseph's Whakatane and Max Yeager from the local Te Kura O Matapihi will be interesting to watch over the next three days. Today, Spring went out in 37 after difficulty on the back nine, finishing with a total of 84. Yeager started on the tenth tee and had 25 stableford points for his first nine holes before hitting three balls out of bounds on the eighth to finish on 90 and 41 stableford points.

Golf continues today a short drive out of Tauranga at Te Puke Golf Course, teeing off at 7.30am.

As first day action at the Basketball drew to a close the topic on everyone's lips was the fantastic new Baypark TECT Arena facilities. Teams, spectators and organisers alike are bustling with positive complements about Tauranga brand new sporting facility.

Local Bay of Plenty schools were thrilled to be the ones to christen the pristine courts. Tauranga Intermediate Girls' lead pool one after two big wins over Ashbrook 64-2 and Diocesan School 85-4.

Meanwhile across the stadium the Tauranga Intermediate Boys' side lead pool A following wins over Te Kura o Te Koutu 62-16 and Waihi College 48-18. A game against the only other unbeaten side in the pool Wentworth College today at 2pm could be the deciding game for the group.

In pool B Otumoetai Intermediate Boys team share the top spot after going through day one unbeaten in games against Whangaparoa College 29-25 and local foes Aquinas College 26-20. They share the top spot with strong out of town competitors Northcross Intermediate. Murray Bay Intermediate lead pool C while Auckland Normal School top pool D.

Melville Intermediate and Murray Bay Intermediate share the top spot in the Girls pool 2 after both sides went through two rounds unbeaten. They face each other first up today when action gets underway again at TECT Arena at 9am.

Car parks were few and far between and applause rung from the stands tonight at Baywaves Aquatic Centre for the heats of the swimming. Fast times and possible records are expected at tonight's finals.
