Policing is in his blood

The grandson of one of Tauranga's most famous police dogs Yoda, is making his name known.

Grit is a 16-month-old police dog in training and has policing in his blood.

A post on the Waikato Police Facebook page says Grit was born in Wellington in January last year but he is a strong supporter of the Chiefs.

'Policing is in his blood. His dad Earl is an ex Waikato Police Dog as both General Purpose Dog and an AOS dog.

'His mum Abby isn't an operational dog, but she is the daughter of the famous 'Dog Squad' star - Yoda from Tauranga. Grit's new handler is Kieran - who you may also remember from Dog Squad with his old dog Gabby,” reads the post.

The pup's favourite food is double-cheese sizzlers and in his spare time he's always keen to get out to Raglan and get amongst the waves!

'His training is going well at the moment. All going to plan, he will be qualified and out on the street catching crims by the end of the year.

'He is really enjoying learning to track people and hates it when it's the weekend and he's not allowed to go to work,” says Waikato Police officer Tristan in the post.

'You will note from his baby photo he was a bit of a cutie, but make no mistake - Grit has a promising future as crime fighting machine.”

Not just the dog either

Grit looks well named alright. But also spare a thought for the dog handlers. These cops are at the very point of the sharp end pretty much daily. First into dark buildings with god know's what waiting for them, especially when criminals seem to have more access to firearms these days. Salt of the earth and highly respected.

All the best
