GRAPHIC: Sheep mauled to death

A Bellevue resident’s sheep have been killed by dogs. A graphic image of one of the sheep is contained in the story below.

A Tauranga man is calling for a dog or dogs 'to be shot” after he found his sheep mauled to death.

Ryan Powell, who lives at a property in Aquavue Way in Bellevue, says all his sheep have been attacked by a dog in the Bellevue area and have died.

'The dog needs to be shot - they're not the first sheep to be attacked in this area.”

Earlier this month, Meg Graeme's parents' sheep were also mauled and killed by dogs.

This was not the first time the Princess Road flock had been attacked, with a flock of 14 being killed last year.

'This time we only lost four sheep, as opposed to the whole flock of 14 last time,” she says, adding that the two lambs who survived the previous attack had to be put down.

The latest attack has seen Ryan take to social media in the hopes of identifying the dogs responsible for the grizzly incident.

'The more exposure the better. It's not the first sheep to have been mauled by this or these dogs and the owner will definitely know it's their dog, with its face coming home bloodied and full of wool.”

If you know the dog or dogs responsible, leave a message in the comments below.

the dog responsible, sorry, but do suggest working with dog control with the use of a cage trap, which is the way we caught a marauding dog many years ago. Heartbreaking to see sheep die this way. Please get a trap.

I have great sympathy for the sheep and owners. After the last story of maulings not long ago in that area, I actually wonder if its a good idea to have sheep so close to town. It does not let off the dog or its owner, but these sheep should not have to be subject to this all the time. They are sitting ducks.

Sitting ducks?!?

These sheep aren't sitting ducks ... people with dogs need to learn to keep their dogs in an enclosed section, and not let them out to do this sort of thing. I see far too many dogs just roaming around willy-nilly with no owner in sight. I agree with the owner of the sheep .. the dog/s who did this need to be put down!

Overit says I wonder if it is a good idea to have sheep, so close to town....I have NEVER heard of a sheep killing a dog, or a child, or anyone, but I have heard of many dog attacks. SOMEONE, must know where these dogs come from...They should be destroyed....I must admit, I would not put anymore sheep in the paddock, unless I was camping there to catch them.

The owners of the dogs....

are the ones who should be shot. Yes, the dogs, it seems, once they have killed once, historically tend to reoffend.... so the irresponsible owners of the dog, by letting the thing roam, are responsible for the death of the sheep and the imminent destruction of their dog. The owners should be thankful the dog didn't kill a child!

So sad for the owner of the sheep. Some people are not fit to have dogs.

Agree

I agree with all of you, but there is an element who have dogs who just don't give a s*** and will continue to let their dogs run free, especially at night, when people are inside and the Dog Ranger has finished for the day. As long as there are people with that attitude the sheep are at risk.

YES

the owners & the dogs need to be destroyed. Someone will know these dogs but probably afraid to say anything for fear of retribution - TCC dog control & sheep owners could offer a $$reward & maybe then someone will dob them in. These dogs are out roaming at all hours so they won't be your average responsible dog owners - you can just about guarantee they'll be scumbags.

Completely Unacceptable

If I had any suspicion a dog of mine had committed a CRIME like this, I would happily volunteer it for distruction. There is no way the owner of this dog/s would not know that they are involved.

We had the same problem a few years back and lost two sheep, the owners of a unregistered dog were spoken to and the dog disappeared. Best of luck identifying the dog or dogs responsible.we fully sympathies with your suituation.

Bummer!

Dogs are like kids. Can get up to no good if given too much freedom and get into a pack, edging each other on. But recently one of my dogs killed one of my chooks solo. Masters of escape! I still haven't figured out how he got into their paddock, but maybe the hen jumped up and flew over the fence. Unfortunately this incident is not all that uncommon where urban and rural populations are adjacent. Farmers are legally entitled to shoot stray dogs on their property but you'd need to be quick. to achieve it.
