UPDATED 3.50pm: Two men arrested in Welcome Bay early this morning, face driving charges following a high speed pursuit from Aongatete.

The vehicle was seen by police at Aongatete after one am. It looked suspicious and the patrol car chased it when it failed to stop for lights and sirens.

The pursuit went through Tauranga City and out to Welcome Bay where the vehicle was dumped and two men subsequently arrested, says Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion.

The driver is facing charges of aggravated failing to stop and reckless driving.

Earlier: Sirens rang out in Welcome Bay early this morning as police chased a fleeing vehicle.

Witnesses to what happened messaged SunLive saying police chased a vehicle through the suburb around 2am.

One person says she was just leaving for work when police cars went screaming past her driveway.

Another reported the fleeing vehicle has having no lights on as it tried to get away from police.

'I had to pull to the side (of Welcome Bay Road) as he came head on towards me. At one stage they dumped the vehicle on Hammond Street and took off on foot.”

SunLive is working on getting comment from police about the chase and will update this story as soon as we have something.

The pieces of human excrement get what's coming to them. What a pity they didn't crash into a tree and save us all their court costs.
