A pedestrian has been hit by a car on Wairoa Road this afternoon.

A police spokesperson says emergency services were called to the incident at 4.26pm, around 5km up Wairoa Road from State Highway 2.

A caller to the SunLive newsroom earlier said traffic was unable to access Crawford Road as a result of the crash.

However, road policing team coordinator Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the road is now open, with stop/go management in place to allow traffic through.

He says one person has been transported to hospital with moderate injuries as a result of the incident.
